As most of you will know i started this thread on the premise of rebuilding a 131, in particular a silver car BLC 597Y, the shell was too far gone and it has now been stripped and s****ped.
However parts of the car will live on in another project 'THE ORANGE CAR' SMW 262Y that i bought from the same guy 'hicky131' aka Wayne, this car has better potential, i have gathered all the following new panels, 2 x doors, 2 x sills, 2 x front wings, 1 x front panel, 1 x rear 1600CL back panel and of course i have spares from 2 cars. All that has to happen now is that it is all put together.
The shell and panels will be going into a local garage come the end of February for all the necessary repairs and replacements, car will then be returned to me resprayed and ready for building up and putting onto the road hopefully before the year end (The plan).
Ill update progress in this THE ORANGE CAR thread.
Heres a couple of photos for now.
Regards
Steve

Hi Steve, glad to see that you're going to get one of the beasties back on the road.

Just for the record, the rear panel you have in the photo is for the Series 1 model, not the 1600CL as you say (which was a Series 2 or 3). If you'd like the correct rear panel for the Sport I'll swap you the one I have for the one you have in the photo, as I have 3 series 1 cars and it's always useful to keep spares!!!! Let me know what you think.

Are they Sport wings? They look like standard 131 front wings to me. There IS a difference - but not too many people can see it. For a start the Sport wings were double the price of the standard wing, they have lugs factory fitted for the plastic 'spats' and they have a much less bulbous profile when viewed from the front. As long as you re-fit both wings the same very few people will notice.

Good luck with the resto. I'll be watching with great interest for when I will inevitably need to do the same with my Racing

Cheers

Simon

Thats it car and panels have gone to body shop 12:30 today, thanks for the comments regards wings and rear panels, im not too familiar with these things however im just going to go ahead with what ive collected and see what comes of the car!
Im awaiting delivery of wing extensions that ive bought from 'Middle Barton Garage' (who are starting a new line in 131 abarth panels) those will be grafted onto the new wings so the fact that the new wings i have are slightly different should be hidden. Im not too bothered about the rights or wrongs of the rear panel, it will be new and thats what matters at the moment, I hope to get down to the garage and take some photos some time, ill post them here.
All i have to do now is wait! Body shop have said end of May!

And here are the wing extensions, bought from 'Middle Barton Garage' contact Julian @ MBG for further details.
They will definetly be going on the car sooner rather than later.

Are you going to fit the Abarth front end to the car as well Steve?
Just asking as i think it would look better with it on to blend into the wings properly.

That's one thing i wish they'd done with mine because as it is,i think it looks crap to be perfectly honest!!

Hi Steve - Kev from Ireland here.

Great to read the regular progress here - Best of luck with the finished article. Congrats on accumalating such a great collection of parts.

Are you sure about those araches though? I suspect that you will need to upgrade the wheels/tyres to fill them properly and as they are being fixed to the existing wings, is there any possibility of body flex causing future cracking where they join? Also Simon made a good point about the rear panel - Unless you have series 1 rear lights you will have a problem with re-assembly. Far better to accept the swop in my opinion - Otherwise it will end up as some sort of *******ised (no offence intended with the adjective) 131 as the Sport was never made in series 1. Maybe you are after the Abarth look in which case a set of series 1 quad headlamps and grill would look better - They come up on German Ebay every now and then. Each to his own though - To me the best 131 Sport is totally original - And I suspect they are worth more ultimately.

Anyway - Please keep this thread updated ...it might even encourage some other part finished projects to be completed. In my opinion you cant have too many 131s, especially black ones.

Best of luck

Kev

Thanks for the comments guys,
I know where you are comming from with originality, however wait until its finnished and take alook at the finnished item, at the end of the day im trying to end up with a nice looking car not an original this or that.
I do intend to put an Abarth front and rear end on her however i still have the panels to locate. Should i fail to locate them the bumpers will have to go back on for the meantime, i do however recall seeing a works car with Bumpers! anyone else remember? and if the car looks good with the bumpers? well lets wait and see. As for the grill, well as you may have gathered im not after producing a replica, so the grill will stay. Im also going to put the original rubber boot spoiler and a rubber roof spoiler back on, if i dont like them ill change them later. I will at some stage put a bonnet scoop on. As for flexing and cracking, yes it happens, i used to have an original Ford Escort RS 1600 Mk1 (theirs a car i wish i had kept) used to do some clubman rallying, i put fibreglass forrest arches on and had some problems with cracking, im hoping the body shop can do a good job to try to limit it, proper fixing to the wings can help, in my mind you must reinforce the extensions with fibre glass under the wing, this after you have cut back and dressed the original panel, and in the case of the rear wing welding is required as the outer panel should be cut away and the inner wing sliced and bent out and up and into the extension before fibre glassing.
I have a set of 7" rims (courtesy Hicky 131) but think im going to have to get 8' or maybe 9' to fill the arches, ill space the wheels out slightly as well. The interior will remain pretty much standard, i may put a rear cage in, more for looks than practicality, however it will be fitted correctly, strengthened mounting points etc, remainder will be as Fiat intended. The car has a sun roof, does anyone know if these were factory fitted? if so its a disgrace, the reinforcing cross member was hacked off and relocated tro the rear of the sun roof apperture with some terrible drilling and rivetting, in fact the cross member is not even supporting the roof, it will be getting welded.
Im back in the UK on the 26th April at which time i will call into the body shop and see what progress their is.
For now a request. Does anyone know where i can get a sump guard?
Steve

Hi Steve,

No - the Racing/Sport never had a sunroof as a factory option. The 1600TC Super did have however but it was a steel affair that was sliding only - very much like that fitted to the Lancia Delta. My black Sport (JPD 969 V) had a glass after market sunroof fitted in exactly the same way as you have described - shocking isn't it?!?!

Best of luck with the resto.

Cheers

Simon

Im back and ive been down to see the car,
ive ttached some photos for you all.
I have also today ordered the fron/rear valance and bonnet scoop from Guy Morenhout,.
As expected when the wings came off it was worse than first expected, however im not giving in on this one, as you can see the floors are now finnished top and bottom, the sills are finnished on the drivers side, passenger side is ongoing, inner wings needed a lot of work and that is now finnished, wheel arch inner are completed as well. Front panel has been cut away and new sections fabricated ready to go in place.
I hope to gte some more photos next month when im back again.
Steve

UPDATE:
Although here in Qatar i can tell you that the new front and rear panels are now on the car, all floors/inner wing and sill works are completed, and the Front and rear valance panels from Belgium have arrived and should be going on to the car along with the wing extensions some time shortly.
I do have a concern, as you may have gathered from previous posts, i bought the wing extensions in the UK and the Front and rear valance from Belgium, i hope they all match up.
Photos when i get home on the 21-22.

Progress is slow, but things are happening, as you can see from the photos, front and rear panels are on, inner wings 100% completed, roof repairs done, Tommy (guy doing the job) collects the wing extensions and front and back panels from me today.
More as and when it happend.

First of the 4 wing extensions going onto the rear, have to stop the work as the arch didnt look right! seems theirs a lean on the panel? ie: arch isnt vertical? small problem to solve but better done at this stage.photos later.
Now i need advice!
Reveloution 5 spoke 9 x 15 or Minilite 8 x 15
Which look better?
